It seems your dog is suddenly scared of something in the house.

You wonder, "Can dogs see ghosts?"

Dogs exercise all kinds of strange things that nosotros humans don't quite understand—including sensing things that we don't. It'southward difficult to unequivocally prove that ghosts, spirits and other paranormal entities exist, but that keen canine perception can be pretty convincing.

When it comes to whether pets tin can run into into the paranormal realm, information technology all depends on who y'all ask.

Karen Anderson, a professional animal communicator, psychic and medium based in Elk, Washington, says pets tin nigh definitely interact with the spirit world.

"Dogs tin can admittedly encounter spirits," says Anderson, who claims she tin communicate telepathically with dogs and cats. "It can be a human, another animal, sometimes not-human, like angelic energies that are around. But, simply like humans, some pets are very tuned in and more sensitive, and others don't have a clue. Every creature is different."

The ones that are more than tuned in use their specialized senses to pick up on spirit energy, she says.

"Dogs can encounter the spirits with their eyes because they take the ability to see things that we can't," Anderson says. "And they tin can hear things nosotros can't, so they tin can pick up the energy that way, too."

Just are they seeing ghosts or normal things that united states humans simply tin can't with our duller senses?

Belle Marie Nibblett, DVM, a lath-certified modest animal internal medicine specialist with Oregon Veterinary Referral Associates in Eugene, says that, when compared to humans, dogs do have a heightened ability to olfactory property, see, hear and feel—which could, in theory, help them sense otherworldly visitors.

Paws down, smell is a canis familiaris'south tiptop sensory superpower, Dr. Nibblet says. Dogs tin can smell pheromones also as odors—something humans cannot.

But can dogs "smell" ghosts? Probably not, she says.

"If yous are fearful of something, though, your dog volition know through your pheromones," she says.

As for hearing, a canis familiaris'due south power to hear higher frequencies than a human being is well known. Think of the archetype dog whistle—the canis familiaris can hear it, merely humans can't, says Dr. Nibblett, noting nosotros tin hear between 64 Hz–23 kHz, whereas dogs can hear between 67 Hz–45 kHz.

That'southward significant, but fifty-fifty more than interesting is that dogs tin focus on a particular audio.

"Dogs have a meliorate ability to focus on a specific sound that they're hearing and, substantially, cake out other sounds," Dr. Nibblett says.

When it comes to vision, dogs can simply see in the blue/violet and ruby-red spectrums, but they excel at seeing movement—particularly subtle motility, Dr. Nibblett says. They also take very sensitive night vision, she says.

"Dogs' sense of sight developed around them being predators," she says. "They needed that ability to see movement and motion in order to take hold of their prey. Everything is developed for seeing things that move."

Dogs as well can sense movement and vibration with their super-sensitive whiskers, Dr. Nibblett says.

"Their whiskers—vibrissae—have a tremendous sensory input," she says. "They tin feel the slightest bit of motion in the air, sending a message to the brain almost the creature'south altitude from the given object."

Their intuitiveness of their environment means they may exist able to run across or even feel quick movement in a room. If you're a skeptic, you lot might say that quick movement is just a mouse or a bug that's too quick for us humans to run across. Or, if you're laic similar Anderson, y'all might say information technology's a spirit.

Spirit energy, Anderson says, sometimes appears as visible orbs or shadows that fly beyond the room or pass through your peripheral vision, so dogs' extra-sensitive motion-detector eyes might allow them to encounter subtle ghostly movement.

"The orbs will shoot by with lightning speed, solar day and night," she says. "And the shadows, they'll appear like a bullet out of the corner of your center. Sometimes it's like, 'Did I really just run across that?'"

So, what's the truth? Tin can dogs see ghosts? Or are they just sensing everyday objects and sounds that we can't. If it seems like information technology could get either way, that's because, well, information technology can‑at to the lowest degree, co-ordinate to Jordan F. Slavik, an instructor at the Academy of Maryland who is currently working towards his PhD in philosophy.

"The most honest scientific reply to whether or not dogs tin sense the paranormal is that we only don't know," he says. "Much like ghosts or spirits themselves, scientific discipline can neither completely prove or disprove such a claim—at least not however."

Because nigh of us are unable to communicate with our iv-legged friends telepathically, how can we tell if our dogs accept a 6th sense? Anderson says to expect for these three clues:

ane. Staring downwards a hallway, wall or corner.

"The number one clue that there'south something nowadays is that your pet volition stare upwardly into the corner of a room at nothing," Anderson says. "Upper corners of rooms are energy vortexes. Energy collects there like a dust bunny nether your couch. So, you'll run across the pet staring up in the corner, or your canis familiaris will wait up and start barking."

2. Barking, whining or showing other anxious behavior.

"Dogs are a lot more than demonstrative in telling u.s., "Hey, there's something here," Anderson says.

They will commencement barking, whining, growling; they might even scratch or become defensive and commencement bankroll down the hallway or dorsum away from a room or a door, she says.

3. Being fearful of or drawn to sure rooms or areas of your dwelling house.

"Pets might also act really weird," Anderson says. "They won't go into a certain sleeping accommodation, or they won't go into a basement. I hear that a lot!"

If you remember your dog sees a ghost, don't panic! Anderson says it'south likely a friend or loved one stopping by for a visit.

"It takes a lot energy for the spirits to show upward," Anderson says. "When they practise prove up, they're non trying to scare you or your dog. It's normally a loved one, human or a pet."

First of all, she says, if your canis familiaris senses a spirit and information technology'due south scaring him, remember that you are in control—of the dog and the ghost.

"Tell the spirit to knock it off and stop scaring your dog or cat," Anderson says.

Speak to your dog calmly if he's frightened, she says.

"Say, 'Skillful boy, good girl for telling me in that location's someone here,'" Anderson says. "Don't become on them for alerting y'all, considering they're doing what they're supposed to do—they're protecting you lot and letting you know that at that place'south something at that place."

You can perform a cleansing ritual of some kind, too, she says.

"Say some prayers, burn sage, apply holy water, or endeavour green fire to help eliminate negative energies and entities," Anderson says. "There are all kinds of rituals you can do at domicile."

In addition, yous should rule out whatever medical anomaly that could be causing your canis familiaris'due south odd behavior, says Dr. Nibblett.

"Dogs and cats tin have fractional motor seizures that crusade fly-snapping behavior, staring off at nada or watching something that's non there," she says. "They tin crusade aberrant encephalon activity."

Dogs can also develop Cushing'south affliction, which is an endocrine disorder, high blood pressure and other conditions that could cause aberrant sleep patterns and feet-related disorders, she adds.

"If you lot come across that beliefs one fourth dimension, that'due south not a big bargain; if you come across it over and over once again, or if it's increasing in frequency, visit your veterinary," Dr. Nibblett says.

Likewise, take a look at things like flickering fluorescent lights and boob tube screens, she says.

"Unlike lights might have vibrations that bother them," she says. "And so, be aware of those sorts of things that might be causing some distraction."Using a product that contains a domestic dog-appeasing pheromone can help, Dr. Nibblett says. Sentry'due south calming neckband for dogs, for example, uses a pheromone that mimics the calming pheromone released past a mother dog to placidity her puppies. It could help an anxious—or spooked—domestic dog relax and feel at ease.
